New York City has a population of more than 8 million people, who together speak some 170 languages.
The City offers approximately 85,000 hotel rooms (as of 2010), 18,000 restaurants, 200 cultural institutions and 49,854 acres of parks and other public spaces. For every taste and for every budget.
New York City offers the experience of a lifetime.
The City is made up of five boroughs—the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Manhattan is an island, and Queens, and Brooklyn form the western end of Long Island. The Bronx is the only borough attached to the mainland. Though the City’s centre is in Manhattan, each borough has its own unique flavour and offers a different twist on what makes New York City so special.

- Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course
- Valentine-Varian House

- Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
- Brooklyn Botanic Garden

- Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts
- Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts
- New York Aquarium

Queens ~ may be the most ethnically diverse place in the world: almost half of its residents are foreign-born, and no American county counts natives of more nations among its numbers.
Queens highlights include:

- Flushing Town Hall
- New York Hall of Science

My visit to New York was just before Christmas was approaching in mid December.
A fabulous time of the year to visit New York City.
Manhattan showed all the signs that the holiday season had arrived.
Manhattan's 5th Avenue stores were very festive with the most amazing holiday season window displays. An art in it's own.
With people carolling in the streets, and people lined up in the streets awaiting their turn to shop at the famous F.A.O. Schwarz, the holiday season had surely arrived. And yes, it was worth the wait to shop at F.A.O. Schwarz.
The street corners were busy with vendors selling roasted nuts, pretzels, hot chestnuts and most definitely New York hotdogs.
Central Park offered horse and carriage rides around green meadows, big rocks, the lake and carousel.
Standing tall and brightly lit in the evening at the Rockerfeller Centre was the biggest and most amazing Christmas tree ever.
New York was truly festive and a gem during the holiday season. |
Shopping in New York is endless.
From the elegant 5th Avenue department stores to the specialty shops to the bargain basement.
New York is a shoppers haven.
Be sure to vist:
- F.A.O. Schwarz
- Tiffany and Co.
- Saks Fifth Avenue
- Zabars
- Macy's and much much more..........
Vendors also set up tables all over town selling all manners of goods from wallets, to sunglasses to perfumes and more.
Just don't expect to get high quality.
Museums are the best in New York .
Highly recommended to be visited, especially:
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art
- The Guggenheim
- The American Museum of Natural History and many more...
Restaurants, New York has many of them per square mile.
Worldwide cuisines are offered throughout New York City.
At some fine restaurants it's often possible to enjoy the same divine cuisine at lunch as at dinnertime for much less money.
If you are considering dining at the “hot spots”, it is recommended to make reservations very far in advance .
Be sure to pick up a copy of “The New York DISH Restaurant Guide“.
Times Square is on 42nd Street, near the theatre district.
A very popular area of New York with tourists from all around the world.
Many movies have included scenes from its famous location and Times Square can get extremely crowded.
With all the brilliant lights, it is best seen and visited in the evening.
Be sure to visit New York's Theatre District for venues at some of the following:
- Carnegie Hall
- Apollo Theatre
- Metropolitan Opera
- Ford Center for the Performing Arts and more...
Even consider taking in one of the Off-Broadway/ Broadway venues:
- Chicago
- Mamma Mia
- Shrek the Musical
- Spamalot
- Jersey Boys
- West Side Story and so much more!
But to avoid disappointmnet consider purchasing your tickets in advance.

The nightlife!
New York boasts:
- Topflight jazz
- Raggae
- Rock n' Roll
- Salsa Clubs
- Blues Clubs
- Friendly Irish Pubs
- Neighborhood Bars and much more.....
The nightlife is very lively on the weekends , tending to stay open until 4am.
It is recommended to take taxis to/from your favorite nightlife spot instead of subways.
Manhattan is the centre of New York City, and Midtown is the centre of Manhattan. For many, this neighbourhood defines NYC: from the bright lights of Broadway and Times Square to the greenery of Bryant Park.
It’s home to corporate headquarters, fine hotels and restaurants, and such landmarks as the United Nations, the New York Public Library and Madison Square Garden.

New York has a variety of accommodations available from budget to first class.
But I recommend that you choice a superior property, as some moderate properties may not be what you expected, unless you choice a moderate property that has been highly recommended.
During my stay, I had the pleasure of staying at the Radisson Lexington Hotel New York.
In the heart of Manhattan's fashionable East Side you will find the hotel has character and a history reflecting the finest in hospitality since 1929.
The lobby extends a warm introduction, enriched by unique arrangements of freshly cut flowers, projecting a comfortable, spacious elegance. Beneath a magnificent three-tier chandelier, a rich, polished marble floor is accented by a vast Oriental rug and is surrounded by rosewood pillars.
The guest rooms are each beautifully appointed and extremely comfortable.
This hotel I would recommend for your stay in New York.
A fabulous location, that allows one to visit many sites within walking distance. |

The New York Bagel ~ There is no bagel like the New York Bagel anywhere else in the world. Bagels arrived from the old world with Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and have become utterly New York in character. You can get bagels anywhere in the city but, for the best bagels you may have to trek away from the main tourist sites. H&H Bagels at 80th St. and Broadway is very popular and expensive, but many bagel connoisseurs consider Absolute Bagels at Broadway and 107th street to be the most traditional and best. For the best bagels, go early when they are warm and straight from the oven.
The New York Hot Dog ~Vendors all over the city sell hot dogs - affectionately called "dirty water dogs" by the locals - from pushcarts on city sidewalks and in parks. Choose your toppings from mustard, ketchup, and relish (or just ask for everything), wrap the dog in a paper napkin, and walk along the sidewalk trying not to let the toppings slip and slide all over your hands.
The New York Deli Sandwich ~ Another delicacy brought over by Jewish Immigrants, you must try either a corned beef or pastrami sandwich. There are some better known delis in the city, but the most famous one is Katz's Deli at Houston and Ludlow Streets. They have been around since 1888, and still pack them in day and night.
The New York Pizza ~A peculiarly New York thing, you can buy pizza, with a variety of toppings, by the slice from almost every pizzeria in the city. A New York pizza has a thin crust (sometimes chewy, sometimes crisp) well lathered with cheese. Buy a slice, mop the oil off with a fistful of napkins, fold in half lengthwise, and enjoy. If you just want a piece of plain cheese pizza, ask for "a slice." Or pick up one with pepperoni -- the quintessential meal on the go in New York.
The New York Cheesecake ~ Made famous by Lindy's and Junior's deli in New York, it relies upon heavy cream, cream cheese, eggs and egg yolks to add a richness and a smooth consistency.
